Sidemen ikat weaving

The Sidemen road is a weaving (no pun intended) and winding road that goes from southern Bali and heads into the mountains/volcanoes of central Bali.  It is very scenic passing through old traditional villages.

We visited the Pelangi (rainbow) weavers and were able to observe from the inception  the process of weaving ikat fabric. Fascinating!  It is the dyeing of the yarns that create the pattern of the fabric. Vegetable dyes are used. The wax /or waxy threads resist the different  dyes applied.  The men created the patterns. The women weaved about 36 feet at a time.  Each woman can weave about 4  feet a day. Each loom had a different pattern. There was a wonderful sound of the shuttlecock flying through the loom.  This is an example of single ikat weaving. This textile design is only made in two villages in Bali.  Diandra also noted that Miley Cyrus' music (unfortunately) had made it's way into the cottage industry.  The first Evil root of globalization is Bad Music and low culture.
(sorry , had to editorialize just a bit)

The Pelangi Weavers certainly created works of beauty.
