Beautiful Beginnings

little Wisnu touches the ground for the first time
little Wisnu held by his maternal grandmother

The other day after traveling to bathe in sacred waters of Tirta Empul in Tampaksiring I received the lovely and coveted invite to attend a baby's 3 month ceremony; the first time a baby's feet touch the ground.
For the first three months of life a baby is held constantly and does not leave the family compound.  This is to create a lasting bond.  How beautiful.
The baby was Putu Wisnu, the first born child of another driver I know,  Wayan (this is the common name for #1 child) also from the village of Bunutan. Putu also means #1 child, but from a higher caste.  The Javanese caste system still is in place in Bali in forms of language and naming.
He lives across the road in his compound from Wayan Jantuk who is my friend and driver.
This ceremony began with the priest intoning chants for an hour or so then the ceremony began with the baby and his parents.  Also, Wayan's family participated (because when a woman marries she lives with her husband's family).
Her family was present but they did not participate.
The ceremony was several hours long........ and little Wisnu did not cry at all!
All photos were taken in the family temple in their family compound
